Unique Christmas Tree Decorations to Make Your Home Stand Out

Unique Christmas tree decorations to make your home stand out are my bread and butter. I adore Christmas! I love to see the trees all decked out from head to toe. Especially, the Christmas trees in stores and the mall as if they are headed to their own runway show at the North pole. I call them haute couture trees! Over the last few years, I’ve been perfecting my chic Christmas tree decorating game. Here are my 5 tips!

1. Start With a Theme

To decorate your Christmas tree start with a theme. The theme could be based on a hobby, a location, or even a color scheme. Do you want a winter wonderland, black/gold, the world’s best cook, or maybe even the traditional red and green theme?

2. Pick a Few Unique Christmas Tree Decorations and Ornaments That Correlate With Your Theme

Once you have your theme, align your ornaments and decor to match. Ensure that your decorations speak to your theme. For instance, if doing a world’s best cook theme, then find miniature stoves or pots and pans as ornaments, perhaps even an apron. And if the theme is a black tie event, you can incorporate a piano or a band in your decor.

3. Use Different Size Ornaments With Varying Textures

Use different sizes and textures of ornaments and decor. Most times I have four different size ranges. For ornaments, get a few really big dramatic ornaments, some medium size ornaments, and some regular size ornaments. Although ornament size is not important when creating a dramatic tree, large ornaments do add a little oomph to an otherwise basic tree.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Use Non-Traditional Ornaments

You don’t have to stick to bulbs for ornaments! I love unique Christmas tree decorations where you see random objects used as ornaments too. One year I took some starfish and made them into ornaments. For my tree this year my theme is white sand beaches. So wood represents driftwood on the beach.

5. Details Matter – Garland, Tree Skirt, and Tree Topper

Details matter! Your garland and tree skirt should align with your theme. You can even take it as far as to have your gift wrapping paper all matched and coordinated with the theme

To decorate the tree, I recommend starting with the lights. If you don’t have a pre-lit tree, then I highly recommend you get one for ease and convenience! Make sure the lights are working and in the right spots. If you have to add lights, then the easiest way is to hang them horizontally. Hanging your lights horizontally, allows you to hang the lights evenly, see dead spots better, and save you the trouble of walking in circles around your Christmas tree. Adjust the lights in any spots that are lacking. After the lights are up, hang the garland! There are a lot of creative ways to hang your garland too! My personal favorite is streaming out from the top vertically!

Then comes the ornaments or decor! Start with the biggest down to the smallest. Then you can eyeball the tree and move things around to balance the tree decor. Shift sizes so you don’t have two big ornaments in the same spot or the same textures side by side.

Once you balance the tree, you can use your smaller or regular-size ornaments to fill in all the holes. Move pieces around to add character to different spots and spread them out so that the tree is balanced.

Lastly, add your tree topper. The top is the icing on the cake and should speak to your theme. I love dramatic toppers. My personal favorite is adding decorative sticks with whatever topper I go with. It adds more drama and is the perfect finishing touch of unique Christmas tree decorations. You can then finish the tree off with a related tree skirt and even wrap your gifts in wrapping paper that compliments your theme!

How do you add pizzazz to your Christmas tree decor!?
