Our Master Bathroom Remodel – Creating a Sanctuary

Bathroom Remodel:

What’s your favorite part of your house? For me it’s the bathroom. Long showers are my happy place. So much so that I told my roommate many times, “remind me to get out of the shower!” Yes, I forget everything else when I am in the bathroom. There is just something about the hot water hitting my back that says, “stay right here, sis.” So, for the bathroom remodel of my husbands 1978 childhood home, the master bath project was a priority. So I deliberated carefully on every bathroom choice. Ok, you’re right I gave that attention to our entire remodel. However, I turned up my deliberations a notch or three for our master bathroom! I wanted a sanctuary with whispers of home and paradise in our bathroom.

Creating a sanctuary

For me, home is the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I have so many childhood memories of playing by the river in Mesopotamia with Brown Girl. The memories make me smile. Yes that was her nickname and for the life of me I can’t remember her real name! Admittedly, I stayed in trouble for those escapades! But that’s another story. Later we moved to Arnos Vale. Walking to the Indian Bay beach with a mandatory stop at the gas station is my fondest memory from that time.

My bathroom remodel takes me home. Every time I look at it my heart smiles. The rocks for the shower floor were nonnegotiable. They remind me of the river escapades. I’m reminded too of a trip home with my husband where he skipped rocks across the sea. For the bathroom niche I fell in love with the shell details in the mosaic I selected. I have a slight obsession with shells. For my wedding my bouquet was all shells and my décor too. So perhaps a smidge more than slight obsession but we will not debate that! So much thanks to Jamil Boyd for helping me with my selections too!

Per our bathroom remodel drawings we were slated to get a regular bathtub, however, I wanted a stand alone! After much debate and adjustments I got my stand alone tub.  Although I prefer showers the stand alone tub elevated the space and made my heart happy.  Every detail spoke to me or evoked an emotion. Including the tile I picked for the shower walls. Our initial mood board and plans for the house stayed farmhouse — that’s what my husband asked our designer for. Once we made our selections however it says “our house”.

Share in the comments your favorite part of your home! If ever you can’t find me, I’ll be tucked away in my wet room pretending that I’m skipping rocks across Indian Bay beach. I can already hear the waves crashing and smell the salt of home. Follow our Instagram for daily updates in stories and in our Home Remodel highlight!
