Long gone are the days when a birthday photoshoot was only for toddlers or big milestone birthdays. The past three years have made it clear that tomorrow is not ours. So each day, and yes each birthday should be celebrated with as much gusto as a fiftieth or eightieth! Besides, in an era of social media, it’s mandatory yes?
Before you get started on your shoot determine:
- the theme
- a color scheme
- your location
- Pinterest board of inspiration
Nail the outfit
The thing that most people struggle with, and understandably so, is the right outfit for their birthday shoot. This was my dilemma as well! When hunting for the perfect outfit select a few and do a full dress rehearsal with each of them. Then choose an outfit that makes you feel the most glam and confident! Or two outfits even!
Have your cake AND eat it!
This may be the only time that you can have your cake and eat it! There’s something just so nostalgic about having a birthday cake. I remember growing up not having a lot of parties, but there was always a birthday cake! Choose your color scheme for the day and get a small or elaborate cake in that color scheme.
In the air
Balloons are a must-have for every birthday! I’m amazed too at the elaborate balloon creations available nowadays. When picking you up balloons, think of the message and theme you want to have for that milestone or that year. You could even pull from pop culture as I did!
Give me my flowers!
A girl needs her flowers. At least for the birthday photoshoot. Even if you’re not a flower person and you prefer a box of chocolates or better yet the cold cash — but I digress — flowers make the perfect prop for a shoot. Whether you wear them or carry them grab a bouquet of your favorite blooms!

Besides your outfit and the props, you need a photographer for your birthday photoshoot! Grab your bestie to fill in if you rather spend the money for a photographer on yourself! Of course, you can substitute a photographer with a handy remote and a tripod.
