How to Style a Sweater Vest For Any Season

I would argue that sweater vests were the number one fashion trend to take over 2020. I spotted my first sweater vest at the end of 2019 on Zara’s website, and it kind of confused me. Part of me thought it was cool and funky and the other part of me wondered how in the world does one style a sweater!? It looks like sweater vests are here to stay for a little while longer as we dive in 2021.  Fortunately for you, I’m here to show examples of the sweater vest trend and how to style them, so you don’t have to go through a phase of confusion like me!

How to style a sweater vest: Jeans, button down, and a vest

Styling a Sweater Vest with Jeans

A sweater vest with jeans is CLASSIC! Wearing any type of jeans work with a sweater vest (example: wide width, straight leg, flare, etc), but my favorite jeans at the moment are straight leg jeans or mom jeans. I paired my outfit with chunky boots which work for both fall and spring since Doc Marten style boots have become a year-round staple everyday shoe. Check out 6 other must-have fashion boots as well! You can also pair your sweater vest with timeless white sneakers too.

Now, this style right here is definitely my favorite sweater vest outfit. I paired my sweater vest with a tan leather bucket hat to coordinate with my tan Chloe Betty boots. My biggest concern when I first paired my vest with an oversized shirt is that it would be a little scandalous, and I’d hate for the wind to blow in a not so flattering direction! Luckily, I quickly realized that a tennis skirt or any white skirt underneath would do the trick!! Not only does the tennis skirt give you the extra length, but it also adds a ‘flow’ dainty vibe to the outfit.

If you’re struggling to find the perfect oversized shirt,  then I would check out the men’s section. Men’s shirts have the perfect mix of length and structure. I typically buy a large in the men’s section, but make sure it the slim fit so the sleeves aren’t baggy.

Who doesn’t love a monochromatic look!? Creating a monochrome look with a sweater vest creates a sleek trendy outfit. If mixing prints is more of your vibe then we have the perfect cheat sheet! A button-down shirt is perfect for the fall/winter seasons, while a long sleeve or short sleeve tee would be more suitable for the warmer months. I love styling outfits with baggy or paper bag pants to make the outfit look like I tried a little less to be put together while being extremely comfortable.
