Spring/Summer 2019 Fashion Trends from the NYFW Runway

Color me Bold

Bold color was the headliner at the Spring/Summer 2019 (SS19) runway at NYFW. Though we were told what the Pantone colors for Spring would be designers did not adhere to any set script and incorporated a myriad of colors and textiles that made for rich, lux runway shows. Fashion Designer & Editor of Raine Magazine, Nova Lorraine recapped the shows perfectly when she shared that, “texture and color were all over the runway this season. From tailored metallics to floor length fringe, everything had it’s place.” Unfortunately for my husband that place will be in my closet! (Ha!)

For me, my love of bold colors married well with the trend of vibrant colors of the SS19 NYFW runway shows. From Nonie, to Cushnie to Meticulously Eccentric, and Prabal Gurung, bright colors gave us a brief escape from the gloomy New York weather. Or perhaps that was all in my head since color is in my DNA. But I digress, back to the SS19 trends…

Utilitarian Details

One trend that made my fashion heart flutter was the well placed utilitarian details. At the Oxford Fashion Studio Show, I wanted to snatch the last look off the model from the Jessture collection and slide it into my closet. The military pockets buttoned to a delicate powder blue blouse created a perfect union. This was one of my favorite pieces.

Dear Denim

I loved the elevated denim on the runway too! Denim looks like those from Cushnie and Prabal Gurung with their interesting silhouettes and denim on denim details took the classic fabric to high fashion.

Runway with the Experts:

I love looking at the shows through the eyes of others too as we each have unique perspectives. As such here is a look at what fashion experts and enthusiasts thought about the SS19 NYFW runway:

Volume and structure

“Designers overwhelmingly focused on volume, movement and structure over body conscious looks this season, giving a futuristic edge to this year’s New York Fashion Week. Designer Mariah Lynn from Philadelphia, introduced an ethereal collection inspired by the ocean. Emanuel Acosta of Puerto Rico, gave the audience a taste of his island by celebrating the beautiful sunsets and their joy of recovery after last year’s devastating hurricane.” Nova Lorraine, Fashion Designer & Editor of Raine Magazine

Return of the jumpsuit

“I felt like there was an easiness about a lot of the collections. Clothes that were sure of themselves in times that are anything but certain. Some strong trends included a return of the jumpsuit and heavy, grounding footwear to balance some of the flowing silhouettes such as at Boss and Michael Kors. Think a Roman sandal meets a Teva and you’re about there.
Color wise mauve is set to dominate SS19, with splashes of yellow, navy and white making up a sophisticated palette.
And get yourself a see-through trench in acid brights to protect against spring showers. They were everywhere!” Melissa Singer, Fashion and Lifestyle Editor at The Sydney Morning Herald

Color Printing

“There was a lot of print on the runway…I love all the texture too! I am looking forward to seeing how fashionistas mix these prints and accessorize it in the spring.” Alexandria Ali, Handbag Designer

“The trends I saw were generally warm colors especially red. Camisole silk dresses were very popular and also sequins! I’m looking forward to sequined dresses.” Maria Chamourlidou, Founder of My Chocolate Novelty and
“Fashion talk”

“I loved the big florals and leopard print everything! I saw lots of dark lace too at Christian Siriano and Candice Cuoco for added drama that will be fun.” MEL-JD/MBA/Influencer/Youtuber

“No single trend was dominant. The gamut ranged from soft flowing silks in bright colors to brocade to velvet to rubber to metallics. Trench coats, slip dresses and sheer fabrics were also quite popular. I loved the very early 90s/late 80’s influences inclusive of military elements shown.” Sloane Boyea, Fashion enthusiast

“On the runway I’m loving the bright color punch of the 80s, power suits, minimal silhouettes, and ruffles are here to stay!” Stacie Yue, Fashion Photographer
